Book Club Discussion Questions for Hopeless Necromantic

If you're a book club looking for discussion questions catered to Hopeless Necromantic, you can find some below. Feel free to choose as few or as many as you'd like.

  1. You’ve just read a book with a sentient, lute-playing skeleton on the cover. Did the book match the expectations you had going in, or did you discover something in the story that you weren’t expecting?

  2. At what point, if any, did you find yourself fully submersed in the book? Was there anything in particular that hindered that immersion for you?

  3. Which character resonated with you the most? Alternatively, which character did you dislike the most? Why?

  4. Did any of the characters make decisions that frustrated you? How would you have made those choices differently? Even if you disagreed, did their actions feel realistic to their character? Why or why not?

  5. Was there a particular scene that stirred a specific emotion in you? Which scene, and what emotion?

  6. This book touches on some intense topics, such as grief, death, and what it means to truly “live”. Did you find the author’s writing style helped or hindered these heavier themes?

  7. If Sikras could resurrect one of your deceased loved ones, with all their cognitive faculties intact for one hour only, would you do it? If so, share a little about who you would bring back, what they meant to you, and how you’d spend your hour with them.

  8. How is Hopeless Necromantic different from other books, fantasy or otherwise, that explore grief as the primary theme? How is it similar?

  9. If this book were to get an adaptation, what do you think would suit it best? Graphic novel? Movie? Musical? TV show? Live action or animated? What would the adaptation add that the book lacked?

  10. Did you have any favorite quotes or scenes from the book? If so, what were they, and why did they resonate with you?

  11. The author herself admits she has no idea how to truly classify this book. If you were to try and explain the genre of Hopeless Necromantic to another reader, how would you explain it?

  12. Hopeless Necromantic is the first in a series. Did the ending leave you feeling satisfied or frustrated? Why?

Are you looking for other engaging Hopeless Necromantic related activities to add to your book club? Here are a few things you might enjoy!

- Make or provide a Hopeless Necromantic-themed cocktail. (If you'd rather channel your inner Sikras Nikabod, who canonically does not drink, try making a mocktail instead.)

- Helspira's dad, Toggones, has a penchant for baking, which carries over into the sequel, Necromantic Getaway. Bake and share something that would make Toggones proud.

- Incense swap! Everyone knows the best way to mask the stench of undead decay is with incense and essential oils. Bring a box of your favorite incense and swap sticks or cones with all the readers.

- Ask the author to record a special message for your book club. (I hear she's chronically online and loves interacting with readers. She's me. I'd be happy to record a message for your book club if you'd like.)
